Interior designer: an inventory of subjects to know in 2025

Between environmental demands and technological innovations, what furniture materials will define 2025? Futuristic or timeless, here's an overview of the sustainable materials to watch. Plastic, wood, wool, or concrete: prepare to be surprised by these options that blend functionality and aesthetics.

Recycled plastic for seating: carpentry reinvented

6.19 billion tons of plastic waste since 2015, less than 10% recycled: it was high time the world of interior design took action and elevated recycled plastic to a noble material. Far from being confined to logistics warehouses and garden furniture, it is now making its way into our homes. The Ombak seating by the Balinese brand Sungai Design , awarded the Future On Stage prize at the Maison & Objet trade fair in September 2024, is a testament to this.

In Bali, where 372 rivers are lined with illegal dumps, collected plastic bags undergo intensive cleaning and are then pressed. The resulting sheets are then assembled into panels, which form the base of the seat. The material, both minimalist and durable, can be sculpted and polished: woodworking reinvented.

Where can recycled plastic be used? This material, which has benefited from several years of R&D, is continuing its conquest of interiors on two fronts:

  • The seating options include the Chap stool made of 100% recyclable propylene designed by Konstantin Grcicau for Vitra, or the Soriana sofa by Cassina, resulting from a partnership with the Polytechnic University of Milan.
  • Storage devices , such as Arik Levy's Tool Box for Vitra made from household waste.

Stamped concrete: adding soul to the world of bathrooms

Among the winners of the Future on Stage award, we find concrete, in an unexpected field: the bathroom. Innovative processes are key. While it meets environmental and aesthetic requirements, how can we give it an extra touch of soul to make it suitable for the most intimate space in the home?

By adorning them with prints whose bold maximalism borders on neo-realism , Cecilia García Galofre, creator of Konqrit, offers bathtubs made of fiberglass-reinforced concrete, decorated by artists. The Inmersion II model , for example, was designed by the Argentinian artist Martin Reyna .

Indoors, stamped concrete is also available for flooring or wall panels in all living spaces. Why choose it for the bathroom? For its high impact resistance, wear resistance, impermeability, and ease of maintenance… but also for the wide variety of patterns and designs it allows, which are usually reserved for other rooms.

A timeless wool, brought up to date for bed linen

A natural feel, distinctive irregularities, and raw hues: wool unfolds its charm and comfort on our beds. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, it captivates with its excellent thermal qualities: neither too hot in winter nor too cold in summer, it possesses self-regulating properties.

Once considered outdated, this fabric is now winning over customers seeking a new kind of luxury: that of a material patiently cultivated in alpine pastures, before being woven in French mills with meticulous and timeless finishes. A material that takes its time, a decorative heritage passed down through generations.

Wool, in the form of throws, blankets, or pillowcases, is primarily used for beds. But its durability and timeless elegance also make it an ideal covering for seating, headboards, or curtains.

Jute rugs: an aesthetically pleasing and water-efficient choice

Jute is a natural material known for its rapid growth and low water requirements. Obtained from the stems of Corchorus capsularis , this material is familiar to us in the form of packaging bags, sometimes repurposed in interiors to add a touch of the exotic. As a rug, it represents an ecological and aesthetically pleasing choice, provided the weave is of high quality.

This is the case, for example, with the brand Liv Interior and its rugs in natural colors. Dyeing without AZO dyes doesn't necessarily mean drabness: the brand's patterns fade into subtle palettes to give its kilims a vintage patina that makes them unique.

Whether used as storage bags, lampshades, or plant pot covers, take advantage of the raw look of burlap by using it sparingly for items that move between indoors and outdoors. Its warm yet neutral hues particularly enhance brightly colored plants… and are reminiscent of the harmonious Mocha Moss , the Pantone color chosen for 2025.

Byssus plates: mussels at the forefront of insulation

While the environmental transition is at the heart of all renovations and new constructions, insulation materials, though invisible, are taking center stage, especially when they are bio-based. Did you know that panels could be created from byssus, the filaments secreted by certain mollusks?

This woven material is often compared to marine silk. In its non-woven form (50 mm thick), it offers excellent technical performance, particularly in terms of sound insulation. Ideal for protective or insulating applications!

Focus on all categories: recycled wood for the homes of tomorrow

A precious material of yesterday and tomorrow, wood remains a favorite in both traditional and modern interiors. How can we use it without exploiting it? Committed individuals are rehabilitating old wood to give it a second life: cladding, custom-made furniture, flooring, or decking… wood is never more beautiful than when its patina, patiently acquired over decades, is enhanced.
